America’s Best Dance Crew Winner Trained in Oakland

One of the best new shows is America's Best Dance Crew - it's exciting, lifts up talent from communities that don't get much play - putting often under appreciated hip hop dance talent on the national stage.  It encourages young people to dream - just love that.  Now, if you've been following the show, you might not know that Nichelle Thrower of the newest winning group, "We Are Heroes" trained in Oakland at the New Style Motherlode dance studio youth program.  There she is, sistah in the white.  We Are Heroes was the first all-female crew to win - not

Oakland’s Parking Saga Not Finished by Long Shot

This morning, I checked the San Jose Merc before my KPFA morning show at 7am.  Saw this article and had to laugh.  The editor - looking for hits I bet - compared the boisterous organizing against the Oakland City Council's decision to extend parking enforcement hours and fees to the anti-health care reform Tea Parties. Um, no. It's absolutely right that the dialog has at points devolved into yelling - but then again that's not unusual at Oakland City Council meetings on any number of issues.  Not particular to Oakland, either, as local issue tap passionate ire. No, what

Gang Wars: Oakland – Has our City all Wrong

Here's the article I published on Alternet in response to this "reality show" that missed reality by about 1000 miles.  We say: stop using meaningless stereotypes to turn people against Oakland - help us find real solutions. Link to full article: The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest -- but the myth -- persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. -- John F. Kennedy There's a rising tide of Americans that is challenging the myths that media perpetuate about people of color, violence and our nation's cities. While Colorofchange.org challenges Glen Beck's racially

From Bitch to Bite: Lisa Jervis

I'm back to my old blogging ways - I've missed you. My Facebook and Twitter might tell me what's happening in Iran or Honduras or Oakland in the moment, but I miss the long-term connection. The t-shirt said it best - 120 is the new 420. So I'm back. I just had to share this interview from this morning- with Lisa Jervis.  By the time she walked into the KPFA studio, I had googled her enough to know she co-founded the ever-insightful Bitch Magazine. She is totally Oakland - feisty and tatted up and totally authentic.  I liked her on

California Budget Woes at your Doorstep

Look out America - as goes California, so goes the nation.  And California is broke.  Better call somebody...quick. Hear experts from California State Controller John Chiang to Jean Ross of the California Budget Project and David Greenwald of the California Progress Report sound off the solutions being floated by the governor and state legislature. Prop 8 Protesters are “like Al-Qaeda”?!

My Tuesday, December 9th interview on the KPFA Morning Show featured the head of the Becket Fund who purchased a full-page ad in the NY Times and LA Times entitled, "No Mob Rule" decrying violence against churches who supported California's anti-gay marriage initiative Prop. 8.  The discussion also included the pastor of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena who called the ad and argument a thin ruse against pro-gay marriage activists.  The heated discussion was picked up by several blogs, including GLAAD's blog yesterday. Here's a bit from the blog: Founder of Becket Fund Compares Prop. 8 Outcry to

Richmond Councilmember Tony Thurmond on Tracy child abuse case

Tony Thurmond joined me on today's KPFA morning show to discuss the terrible case of the abused teen in Tracy.  It's complex - the foster care system, budget cuts and the family are all to blame, Thurmond argues.  He was a social worker himself and was raised by family members. tony-thurmond-tracy-abuse-case

Mark Sanchez – Anti-Violence Advocacy from the Ground Up

If you are a SF voter, you must know about Mark Sanchez, who is running for SF Supervisor in District 9.  He is a true reflection of the pro-community, pro-fairness, anti-violence values of the community.  Read his recent opinion piece on SF prop. V that he published in the SF Chronicle: Prop. V promotes 'Don't ask, don't tell' mandate original link Should public schools open their doors to military recruitment, of any type, on campus? That was the question San Francisco voters took up in 2005, when they overwhelmingly passed Proposition I, which urged the city's schools to reject military

Women of Alaska Rally against Palin

This is too good not to repost.  Alaska's women rallying against Palin and her scorched-earth policies.  Thanks to Miriam Schalit in Alaska for the following write up [empahsis hers].  She also sent also a collection of photographs from the event. Photos of  Biggest Rally in ALASKA history... anti-Palin [The]  Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was to be held outside on the lawn in front of  the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage. Home made signs were encouraged,  and the idea was to make a statement that Sarah Palin does not speak for all  Alaska women, or men. I had no idea
