I just had a conversation previewing Pacifica Radio’s unconventional DNC coverage on my show on Friday.  Check it out:

I’ll be anchoring coverage of the Democratic National Convention in Denver for the Pacifica Radio network. I’ll be blogging about our unconventional convention coverage. Our coverage gives us an opportunity to elaborate on the issues that we care deeply about - social, racial and economic justice - angles that will likely be missed by other media outlets. Pacifica Radio will be broadcasting from Denver Monday through Thursday of next week, from 5-9pm pst. More details on the website.

In the meantime, I have a super smart friend Corey Cook Professor at the University of San Francisco that is blogging about the convention. Here’s his hit on Biden being named Obama’s VP:

It’s Biden!

August 23, 2008

First. He played this close to the vest. A lot of headfakes, a lot of misdirection, but somewhat stunningly (at least until an hour or so ago) there were no leaks and no obvious mistakes. I think this says something about his managerial style that people close to the campaign didn’t know the choice until very recently. Remarkable discipline for a first time candidacy. Impressive.

Wow. So the mainstream media had been reporting for several weeks that Delaware Senator Joe Biden was the favorite, but I’m still a bit stunned. It’s certainly not a homerun pick. Maybe a clean single. Or a bloop single. Or a swinging bunt. But it’s not a glaring mistake or a reach. Probably wouldn’t have been my first choice, but then again I didn’t get 18 million votes in the primary elections, so I don’t get to pick.

So what do I think we learned about Senator Barack Obama in his first real test?

Obama basically had 4 choices: 3 senators and to quote Michael Moore, “As for Governor Kaine of Virginia, his big problem is, well, Obama’s big problem — who is he?” H. Clinton brings too much bad blood back into the campaign. I’ve never heard of Senator Bayh (I guess I don’t watch C-SPAN enough) so that leaves Biden. He makes a great candidate for vice-leader of the Empire. He voted for the latest war, politically right of Mr. O, experienced, White, male, intelligent, and very smooth. What have we learned about Mr. Obama with this latest action? Nada. Like many Democrat senators, saying one thing and doing/voting another is common practice. What have we learned about Mr. Obama? He wants to win.

The Book

An activist’s guide to combating military recruitment.
http://myspace.com/armyofnonebook

Uniformed U.S. Army Officers lunch with students in elementary school cafeterias. Army training programs including rifle and pistol instruction replace physical education in middle schools. Like never before, military recruiters are entering the halls of U.S. schools with unchecked access in an attempt to bolster a military in crisis.

However, even as these destructive efforts to militarize youth accelerate, so do the creative and powerful efforts of students, community members, and veterans to challenge them. Today, the counter recruitment movement—from counseling to poetry slams to citywide lobbying efforts—has become one of the most practical ways to tangibly resist U.S. policy that cuts funding for education and social programs while promoting war and occupation. Without enough soldiers, the U.S. cannot sustain its empire.

Army of None exposes the real story behind the military-recruitment complex, and offers guides, tools, and resources for education and action, and people power strategies to win.
